Grandpa Bert Sheckler used to tell lots of stories about "when I was a boy..." Not long after his mother married "Uncle Ike", Bert was "bound out to two maiden ladies" until he was 16 years old. Uncle Ike was very good to the kids, but they were very poor. He told about the cranberry bogs in Crawford County and about the "big woods" where there were wild animals so children on the way to school had to stay on the path and in a group, never alone.

When they lived in Dexter, Michigan the property was on the mill pond so the children could go fishing at any time. There was one rule - "Catch as many fish as you want, but clean all you catch." When they ate fish they picked out the bones themselves. If a bone should stick in your throat, someone handed you a slice of bread. They all learned quickly about fish and fishing. In 1951 they moved from Michigan to florida. Myrtie died two months after their 68th wedding anniversary. Bert Sheckler, like all Shecklers in our family, was an avid fisherman. At age 85, he had his picture in the local newspaper when he caught a 40 in., 22 1/2 lb. red fish in the river, Anclote, FL. At age 91, he stopped driving his car, but still rowed his boat up and down the river fishing. He lived alone for a short time after Myrtie's death, but soon sold everything and moved into a nursing home, where he lived until his death. He had a keen alert mind al long as he lived.
