In all public records, Hugh is listed as a wagon maker and farmer, but "family legend" says that he also had a stagecoach inn in Bedford Co., PA. There is no proof to verify this legend, but historians in that area of PA have testified that it is possible the legend is true since there was an inn about every mile or so along the stagecoach route through that rough mountainous area. |

Partial part of
Daniel's diary as he served in Revolution: "On the 9th of June, after a
rapid march to the rear of Petersburg, on the Jerusalem Plank Road, the
division made an attack, carried the works, capturing one gun and fifty
prisoners, and entered the edge of town. General Gilmore with a
large force of infantry and artillery, having been ordered to take a
feint on the main works, four miles to the right, failed to do so with
sufficient energy to hold the enemy, who moved heavy reinforcements to
oppose the attack of the cavalry, which was then withdrawn, without
accomplishing the main object of the expedition - the destruction of
the railroad bridge over Appomattox. In these operations the Eleventh
bore a conspicuous part and suffered considerable loss." Daniel C.
Sheckler, SGT., died June 10, in Chesapeake Gen'l Hosp'l of wounds
received near Petersburg, VA, - buried in Section E, Grave 399,
National Cemetery, Cemetery road at
Marshall Ave., Hampton, VA, -Vet.

Sarah , at about age 4, came with her parents by wagon (before the days of railroads in this section) to Bucyrus, OH which is still the home of surviving members of the family. "Miss Sheckler attended the schools here and acquired a fine education. In 1865 she became a teacher in the public schools of the city, remaining in the service until 1897, a period of thirty-two years. among the teachers of the city she held always a high rank. She possessed in large measure the teaching faculty, and her pupils made excellent progress. She held their love as well as their respect, and her death brought sorrow to hundreds of her former pupils, as well as other relatives and those who were privileged to enjoy her intimate friendship. Miss Sheckler had seen the changes of this region from the wilderness to the advanced civilization. she contributed much to the culture and refinement of the community. She was a true and consistent Christian, a member from childhood of St. Paul's' Lutheran church. She was a lady of great refinement and of the highest culture, leaving an indelible impress upon the lives of those with whom she came in contact." | ||||||
